American Furniture is Highly Customizable

We know many people already associate furniture made in the USA with higher quality, from the materials to the manufacturing process itself.

Furniture made in the USA is also easier to customize so you can get exactly what you want — from the color of the fabric or leather used to the materials you want (or don’t want).

Here are some of the key ways you can customize furniture made in America and North America:

Variety of price points, from affordable to high end: Whether you’re on a tight budget or you’re looking for a high-end option built to last, American-made furniture brands offer options for any budget. Every item you buy from Watson’s is also covered under our Lowest Price Guarantee.

Configuration or layout options: American-made furniture features a variety of configurations to fit any room, regardless of the size or layout. With many of the sofas or sectionals we carry, you can easily customize the layout. Want to flip the chaise lounge to the other side, or add an extra seat in the middle? No problem.

Fabric options are endless: Leather, velvet, and linen are just a few of the upholstery options available on furniture made in the US. You can often choose from thousands of colors or designs -- and often at no extra charge, too. Learn more about our Custom Furniture program here.

More design styles to choose from: Furniture made in the USA tends to be available in a wider selection of design styles. Whether you’re shopping for a sofa, sectional or other furniture, you can choose from contemporary, traditional, mid-century modern, farmhouse and more.

If you like the idea of customizing, you’ll love Watson's custom furniture program.

Options will vary by brand, but you can often choose your own color, fabric, layout, finishes and more. We do not add any design or customization fees.

Many customers discover that custom is far more affordable than they expected, with options at every price point. See more about our custom furniture program here.

Construction & Materials Matter in American-made Furniture

Furniture should be built to last.

Two of the most common ways that manufacturers cut costs — synthetic materials and relying on computers and machines, instead of humans — can negatively impact both the durability and quality of your furniture.

In American-made furniture, you’ll often find more choices that prioritize natural materials and a high quality, handcrafted manufacturing process.

It will just come down to your personal preferences, what’s important to you and your budget.

Let’s break down some of the most common terms you’ll see for furniture made in the USA so you can make an informed decision about the quality, durability and value.

Down cushions vs. foam cushions

All-natural down cushions are the softest, fluffiest and most luxurious cushions, made for sinking in. Cushions can also be made as a down and feather blend.

(If you choose an all-down cushion, make sure you fluff it up daily. This not only makes the cushions more soft and inviting, but also helps them keep their shape.)

Foam cushions can be manufactured in many ways. You’ll commonly find options made from polyester fiberfill (an affordable option) or high density polyurethane foam (more resilient).

Foam cushions tend to be a cleaner look and more firm and supportive than down.

Particle wood vs. kiln-dried wood

Particle board is a kind of engineered wood, made from the chips and fibers leftover after a tree is milled into lumber. Those fibers are mixed with glue, then fused under heat and pressure and bonded to an artificially laminated surface.

Kiln-dried wood is solid wood that has been dried inside a kiln, which is like a large oven with controlled temperature and humidity. Kiln drying removes about 93 percent of the moisture from the wood, so it resists cracking or warping.

Sinuous-springs system vs. eight-way hand tied

Sinuous-springs are the most common suspension system used in low- to mid-range sofas. They’re made with heavy-gauge steel wires bent into S-shaped coils. They’re known for comfort and durability. They’re also quick to install, something that should be reflected in a more affordable price tag.

Eight-way hand tied is considered the gold standard of sofa suspension and a signal for high-quality manufacturing. The springs are supposed by webbing on the bottom of the sofa, and the top of the springs are secured by twine. That keeps the springs from shifting.

It’s the most labor intensive, which will drive the price tag up, but it’s a high-end choice that should provide years of unwavering support.

Bench-made furniture

Benchmade refers to the manufacturing process where a piece of furniture is crafted primarily by one person. It’s often referred to as handcrafted or artisan-crafted furniture. In most (but not all) cases, it indicates sustainable sourced and the finest, highest quality wood.

Hand-tied and bench made vs. machine made

Hand-tied rugs are handcrafted from start to finish. Wool and silk fibers are spun into yarn by hand, which is then dyed, woven and knotted by hand into rugs.

This is a time-consuming process that requires hours of labor and skill, which can all drive a higher price tag. Thanks to the natural materials and superior manufacturing, though, handmade rugs tend to have a very long life span and can last several generations.

Machine-made rugs often use bleached wool and synthetic fibers. They are made in just minutes with a high-powered industrial loom and multi-needle sewing machine.

Evolution of Motion in Furniture Made in the USA

Motion furniture continues to be a hot trend across all furniture, but especially American-made brands.

When you hear the term “motion furniture,” it means the furniture is made to move — lift chairs, power headrests or footrests, power recline, reclining sectionals and more.

Motion furniture all began with your grandfather’s recliner, the one where you pushed down a stiff lever on the side and the bottom panel raised your feet straight in front of you.

Then manufacturers introduced power, with a cord that plugged into an electrical outlet and a simple touch of a button.

Now, motion furniture is more stylish, more functional and more technology-forward than ever.

The selection of motion seating is becoming increasingly stylish, with slimmer profiles and design styles from contemporary to modern to traditional.

You can also shop motion furniture in more color options than ever. Choose from fabric, leather or faux leather in thousands of colors or patterns.

With the latest motion technology, you can also adjust each piece of the furniture to the exact level you want. Most manufacturers now often cordless battery units so you can easily place your furniture anywhere in your home. Then you can get comfortable with a simple touch of a button.

American manufacturers have made it easier than ever for you to get into the perfect position for comfort while watching TV, napping, reading or playing video games.
